We are facing an epidemic of loneliness and isolation, exacerbated by the Covid pandemic. No age group or demographic is immune, and the effects are felt throughout society. We have fewer friends, we trust them less, and we go to them less often for support. Increasing isolation causes social, economic, religious, and political divides to grow, making social connections even harder to establish, fueling a downward spiral. Board games can play a powerful role in building community by bringing people together in a shared experience that fosters connection and collaboration. Unlike passive entertainment, board games require players to engage with one another, face-to-face, creating opportunities for communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Games help break down barriers and build trust; they help people to connect, learn from each other, and build lasting relationships.

Advance Three Spaces is a 501c3 charity dedicated to reducing loneliness through cooperative gaming events in the Tampa Bay Area.

Why “Advance Three Spaces”? Beyond the board game reference, the idea of “third spaces” refers to places outside the home (first space) and work (second space) where people gather, socialize, and build community. Third spaces play a huge role in fostering a sense of belonging and improving quality of life by providing informal, neutral, and accessible environments. Unfortunately, third spaces are on the decline.
